Conservation status
In some trouble

These sprightly shorebirds patrol seashores, estuaries and braided riverbeds, darting after tiny invertebrates in a run‑stop‑peck sprint. Pohowera means “burnt chest” and that’s a great way to spot them. Listen out for their sharp “chee‑aree‑aree” call. After breeding, about half of the population makes 1600-kilometre journey across the ditch to Australia. We try not to hold that against them.

Kia ora! We are a group of postgraduate ecology tauira with a love for manu and an even bigger love for bird-themed memes. Here is a list of reasons why pohowera banded dotterels ("bandies") should be your first pick for BOTY:

1. Um.. have you SEEN pohowera?? Too CUTE!
2. A vote for pohowera is a vote for braided river, duneland, and estuary habitats
3. They're fashionable (stripes are so in this season!)
4. Raise awareness about the risks of predation & disturbance for ALL ground-nesting birds
5. Look up photos of pohowera chicks (spoiler: they're adorable)
